Well, I solved the problem by downgrading the driver in Vista to an older version before performing the upgrade to Windows 7 - I replaced the Adaptec v6. No idea why an older driver should work and not the newer driver both from the controller vendor. Can I do that?

Unless you relish playing with old hardware, I'd recommend trashing them.
